GMA should be ashamed of this “report.”

This “Pet doors have led to the deaths of more than 100 children.”  report is some of the worst reporting I think I have ever seen.   I feel so sorry for the people that have lost loved ones but the lack of common sense and the desire to find a scape-goat is simply astounding.

The doors did not kill anyone.  They created a path-way to get out of the house and into the swimming pool or out in the street.   The manufacturer was able to keep a straight face but stated the obvious… It is a door.    I watched the video, saw the size of the dogs and then the kids.  Simple facts if a 25-30 pound dog can get through the door so can a 25-30 pound child.

I guess I should not be surprised anymore.    I have seen enough “do not hang ceiling fan while running” warnings, but this one threw me.   Blaming the door for the lack of watchful eyes or protection around the swimming pool it simply nonsense.   Have they not heard of criminals using these doors for access?  Or seen that video of a deer coming through the door?  And that one was at least half the size of these.  Why not blame the driveway pavement for leading to the road that caused the accident?

I understand the pain of the families and the need to try and make sense of a senseless tragedy. But sometimes accidents are simply accidents.   But I blame GMA for giving voice to this argument and slanting the coverage towards the “doors leading to deaths” nice play on words to avoid the analogous but untrue “causing” but the inference is the same.   Coverage as a consumer warning may have been successful.

In the end, the company will settle out of court, pay millions and we will all see warning labels and higher prices.   This product can now be added to my list, a list of those products that I will demand a discount due to common sense.     Can I pay $100 for a common sense membership and receive discounts on products?
